No Loose Ends
Sunday Scaries Part One
“That’s why I’m easy, easy like Sunday Morning”, is how Lionel Richie used the calm vibe of a Sunday morning to describe a recent breakup in The Commodores iconic song “Easy”. For some though, there’s nothing easy about Sundays. Waking up on Sunday morning can bring the realization that in less than 24hrs, you’ll be going back to work or school, waking up early, the traffic you’ll encounter, the impending deadlines and performance metrics…all waiting for you. It seems that the anxiety, dread and despair many used to feel when afflicted with “A Case of the Mondays”, has now taken over our precious Sundays.
Definition:
The Sunday Scaries: are the anxieties one experiences on Sunday when thinking about the impending workweek, school week, or other obligations that await in the week ahead. They are especially bad when accompanied by an end-of-the-weekend hangover. Urban Dictionary enters the term Sunday Scaries in 2009 and a 2013 article suggests it originates in the New York City area.
The Sunday Scaries sound somewhat juvenile, eliciting images of the boogie man, but there’s nothing childlike about them. In this series I will share four ways to stand down those anxious emotions allowing you to fully enjoy your Sunday.
1.) No Loose Ends
Yes I know TGIF, you just want to get out of work and let the weekend begin LIKE NOW. I mean you’ve been busting it all week, working for ‘the man’ and it’s time to punch out. STOP that weekend bus right there and remember you’ll be coming back in on Monday, any unresolved issues or less than exciting duties will be waiting for you. Take stock of what you can get done, DO NOT push off anything that you can take care of on Friday to Monday because you don’t want to deal with it. That procrastination, the choice to push the ‘pain’ to the future will do more harm than good. If you don’t want to get it done on Friday, you’ll definitely not want to get it done on Monday. Leaving those duties to Monday means you’ll also have the added stress of knowing that you did it to yourself. Make your Friday Self step up and make your Monday Self’s job a little easier…Monday You has enough on his/her plate.
