Entrepreneurs Work in the Dark

“We work in the dark - we do what we can - we give what we have. Our doubt is our passion and our passion is our task. The rest is the madness of art.” – Henry James

This is by far one of the hardest ones for me, and thankfully it just gets easier as your skin gets tougher and tougher.  You get some support…you will get some feedback and pats on the back especially in the beginning, but do not think for a second that what you’re doing is top of mind for everyone else. Your family, your friends, even your ideal clients, everyone will have their own lives going on, and those will rarely include you. You must be able to reverently work in the dark, keeping your head down, producing, creating and working for months...if not years…with very little results.

This is especially true when it comes to social media, there is so much out there and you will be part of the white noise for a while (a long while) and you’ve just got to keep producing.  It’s not about how many likes or comments your content receives, it’s about being a consistence presence. If you’re lucky enough that your business’s purpose is anything like mine (mindset coaching) then chances are your content is going to stir up people’s emotions, cause a little self-reflection and create some inner awareness and discomfort. No one is going to hit like on a post that causes them to glance in a mirror they’ve been avoiding, so adding humor (to your posts and yourself) is always helpful.

Remember your passion must be the work itself, the vision, and it must be so great that even when you’re alone…working in the dark, you’re still having fun doing it.

This is part of the Chronicles of a Bootstrap Solopreneur Series.

In this series, I share the knowledge, insight and concepts I’ve learned to be beneficial during my time spent thus far as a solopreneur.  Many of these methods, mindsets and tactics can be applied to areas beyond the business arena. Starting your own business is basically an exercise of continuous personal growth through: failure, triumph, creation, organization, chaos, perseverance, effort, dedication, vulnerability, self-evaluation and hope…like on the daily.  All of these concepts have been Liz tested and approved to be effective in keeping you on course, focusing on what’s important, and succeeding in your venture however you may define success.
